In a couple previous blogs I trashed all the "iPhone Killers" and kind of laughed at Sprint telling me the Palm Pre was their answer to the iPhone. I had read some articles about the Pre and originally it was supposed to have a resistive screen but I found out today that they actually used a capacitive screen with multi-touch.
So yeah I was uninformed before and now I'm eating crow. If you read the post about "iPhone Killers" you know that one of my biggest points was that a phone can't compete with the iPhone if it doesn't have a multi-touch capacitive screen. As soon as I found the Pre was capacitive multi-touch, I found a Pre vs iPhone video on youtube.
After watching this video, I actually kind of want a Pre now and am kind of annoyed that I just ordered an iPod Touch. I really like my Samsung Instinct but it's kid stuff compared to the Pre. While I am a pretty die hard Apple fan, it looks like they have some stiff competition now.

You have the remember that the pool of developers for the Pre is much smaller (and much less enthusiastic).
Plus the Apple GUI is just pretty.
I kind of disagree about the developers. When I owned a Palm IIIxe, there were tons of free apps you could download as well as a lot that you paid for. On the other hand, when I procured a Windows Mobile device around the same time, you had to pay for nearly every single program.
The IIIxe was a while ago but the point is there were a lot of really loyal Palm users and developers out there. The question is are they still out there? I would venture to say yes based on several articles I have read. Many Palm users are hoping this is the resurgence of the company and I would bet that there are a good number of developers in the group.
I really hope the Pre is successful because it will spur Apple on to make the iPhone better and back and forth.
The reality though is that in the next year or two most phone are likely going to switch over to the capacitive touch screens which will significantly change the market. Apple will likely become much less relevant unless they unveil the iTeleport.
